When a city encounters a "sponge", what kind of sparks will come out?

Recently, the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction of the Zhejiang Province, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Finance, and the Department of Water Resources of the Zhejiang Province jointly released the list of sponge city demonstration projects for 2023 and the list of candidate sponge city demonstration projects for 2024. Two projects in the Jiangbei District have been selected as sponge city demonstration projects in the Zhejiang Province in 2023, marking a new level of urban construction quality and ecological environment level in our district.

The concept of Sponge City aims to make cities become like sponges in nature, flexible and elastic. When rainwater falls, such cities can quickly absorb and store water, and through careful design and technological means, the city can infiltrate and purify water, making every drop of rainwater efficiently utilized. In times of drought or with other water needs, sponge cities can release the previously stored water resources to meet the needs of the city.

Scenery of the Yaojiang River

The Sports Park on the north side of Block 2 # on the east side of the Olympic Sports Center in the Yaojiang New Area: this project is an urban sports park with a complete sponge technology route, using various sponge facilities such as permeable paving, rainwater gardens, grass planting ditches, and retention wells to connect and guide the vast majority of rainwater into green facilities or storage facilities. This project increases urban storage space by 69.1 cubic meters and achieves initial rainwater runoff pollution control on the ground of 13,768 square meters.

The Jiangbei District Hongda Road (Jiangbei Avenue - Hongtang South Road) Project: this project is an urban road green space, with a four-board and three-belt road section type. The sponge technology route of this project is complete, with the central isolation belt bearing the effect of non-sponge landscape main road, and the motor vehicle and non-motor vehicle isolation belts on both sides bearing the sponge function. Through the control of the cross slope of the road, various sponge facilities such as side stone openings, sunken green spaces, and initial rainwater retention wells are used to control all rainwater in the motor vehicle and non-motor vehicle isolation belts. The rain control effect is obvious and the construction is fine.

It is learnt that the protective green belt project (Kaiyuan Road - Panyue Road) section, the Hongtu Road (North Ring West Road - Jinshan Road) improvement and renovation project, and the Beihai Road (North Outer Ring Road - Hongxing Road) project in the start-up section of Yaojiang New Area in our district have also been selected as candidate projects for the Sponge City Demonstration Project in Zhejiang Province 2024.

"For the next step, the District Office for Sponge Function Development will take the normalization and comprehensive promotion of a sponge city in our district as its working goal, coordinate planning and orderly implementation, adhere to solving problems and fulfilling goals, strictly control the quality of sponge city construction, and solidly promote the demonstration project construction of a sponge city in 2024, making the rainwater and flood management in our district more precise and effective."
